The air in the bustling airport terminal suddenly turned to ice. Victoria felt the oxygen vanish from her lungs, replaced by a suffocating weight that pressed down on her chest. The flight number printed on the ticket in front of her felt like a jagged blade twisting deep into her heart.
Two decades. It had been exactly twenty years since that ill-fated flight—the very one her sister was supposed to have boarded. It was the fateful afternoon her sister vanished without a trace, the day Victoria made the agonizing choice to tell the world she was gone forever.
Now, a little girl stood before her, clutching a worn bag, her eyes holding an eerie, knowing gaze. ‘Mom said you abandoned us,’ the child said, her voice piercing the ambient noise of the terminal.
Victoria’s vision blurred. ‘No…’ she stammered, the words catching in her dry throat. ‘That… that is impossible.’

Slowly, deliberately, the girl reached into the bag and pulled out a tarnished silver necklace. The metal caught the harsh fluorescent light of the ceiling.
Victoria gasped, her hand flying to her mouth to stifle a sob. She recognized the delicate links immediately. It was the very necklace she had placed around her sister’s neck on the day of their tearful parting. Etched into the silver backing were the words she had engraved herself: Always come home.
Her knees buckled, barely supporting her weight as she looked at the young face. ‘Where…’ she choked out, tears finally spilling over. ‘Where is your mother?’
The girl’s lower lip trembled, her eyes casting downward. ‘She’s here,’ she whispered.
Panic surged through Victoria. She spun around, searching the sea of strangers. ‘Where? Tell me where!’
With a slow, deliberate movement, the child lifted her hand and pointed over Victoria’s shoulder.

Victoria turned, the breath freezing in her throat. Standing amidst the bustling crowd, staring directly at her, was the woman she had buried in her heart twenty years ago.
