— “An ambulance? You think an ambulance can fix this?” Her voice was laced with a bitter, broken fury.
— “It was an accident! I swear to God, Elena, I didn’t want this.”
— “Didn’t want this? You were screaming at me, threatening me! You… you knocked me down, Richard!”
Her breath hitched, a sob wracking her small frame. She looked at the blood, then back at him, her eyes blazing with a pain that cut him to the core.
— “You’re going to kill our child, Richard! You’re going to kill our child!”
— “Don’t say that! Don’t you dare say that!” He reached out a trembling hand, but she flinched away.
— “Get away from me! I don’t want you near me! I don’t want you near my baby!”
She pushed herself up, her movements slow and pained, her hand still pressed protectively to her belly. The blood continued to seep from her, a silent, terrible testament to the violence that had just occurred.
— “I’m going to the hospital. And when I get back, you and I are done, Richard. Forever.”
She stumbled towards the door, her legs weak, her body trembling. Richard watched her go, his world crumbling around him. He was left alone in the room, the silence deafening, the only evidence of the horror a dark stain on the floor.
Hours later, Richard sat in the sterile waiting room of the hospital, his suit rumpled, his face etched with exhaustion and despair. He hadn’t slept, hadn’t eaten. Every second felt like an eternity. He replayed the scene over and over, the sound of Elena’s screams, the sight of the blood. He had lost control. He had become the monster he always feared he would be.
A doctor emerged, his face grim. Richard’s heart leaped into his throat.
— “Mr. Thompson?”
— “Yes? Is she… is the baby…?”
The doctor’s expression was unreadable. He sighed, a heavy, weary sound.

Richard let out a shaky breath, relief washing over him in a tidal wave.
— “Thank God.”
— “However,” the doctor continued, his voice dropping, “there were complications. The placenta detached prematurely. It was a very close call. It’s a miracle, frankly, that both mother and child survived.”
Richard nodded, unable to speak. He wanted to thank the doctor, to thank the universe, but the words wouldn’t come.
— “Can I see them?”
— “Yes. She’s in recovery now. Room 312.”
Richard practically ran to the room. He pushed the door open, his eyes immediately finding Elena. She looked pale, exhausted, but alive. And in her arms, swaddled tightly, was a tiny, perfect baby.
He approached her slowly, his heart pounding. He stopped a few feet away, afraid to break the fragile peace.
— “Elena…”
She looked up, her eyes meeting his. There was no anger, no hatred, just a deep, profound sadness.
— “He’s beautiful, Richard.”
She held the baby out towards him. He hesitated, then reached out, his hands shaking. He gently touched the baby’s tiny hand, his fingers dwarfed by the miniature perfection.
— “He is.”
— “I… I can’t do this anymore, Richard.” Her voice was quiet, firm. “We can’t. Not after this.”
— “I know.” His voice cracked. “I understand.”
— “I’ll be staying with my parents for a while. Until… until I figure things out. For him.”
She looked down at the baby, her eyes softening with a fierce, protective love.
— “He deserves better than… than this. Than us.”
Richard nodded, tears blurring his vision. He looked at the innocent face of his son, a life he had almost destroyed.
— “I’ll… I’ll support you both. Whatever you need. Whatever he needs.”
— “Thank you, Richard.”
