The cold kitchen tiles bit into his spine, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the absolute terror in her eyes.

He stared up at her, his breath hitching, chest heaving as the shattered glass crunched beneath his boots.

“Sarah…” he whispered, his voice trembling, a pathetic rasp in the heavy silence of the room.

She stood over him, her chest rising and falling in violent, jagged rhythms.

Her hair was plastered to her forehead with sweat, her hands still raised, shaking uncontrollably.

“Don’t say my name,” she hissed, her voice dripping with a venom he had never heard before.

“Don’t you ever say my name again!”

She grabbed the edge of the counter, her knuckles turning white as she fought the urge to grab the largest shard of glass near her foot.

He slowly pushed himself up on his elbows, wincing as a piece of porcelain from the shattered plates dug into his palm.

“You don’t understand,” he pleaded, a tear finally breaking loose and cutting a clean line through the dirt on his cheek.

“I had no choice.”

Sarah let out a laugh that sounded more like a dry sob, a hollow, broken sound that echoed off the cheap kitchen cabinets.

“No choice?” she screamed, stepping forward, the glass crunching loudly under her sneakers.

“You drained the accounts! You mortgaged the house! But that wasn’t enough, was it, David?!”

He flinched, pulling his knees toward his chest, unable to look her in the eye anymore.

“Was it?!” she shrieked, kicking a heavy cast-iron pot across the floor. It slammed into the oven with a deafening clang.

“Tell me where she is.”

The words hung in the air, heavy, suffocating, freezing the blood in his veins.

David squeezed his eyes shut.

“Tell me where our daughter is, David.”

Her voice dropped to a terrifying, deadly whisper. It wasn’t a question anymore. It was an execution order.

He swallowed hard, the metallic taste of fear pooling in his mouth.

“She’s safe,” he choked out, his voice cracking.

Sarah froze.

The air in the room seemed to vanish.

“Safe?” she repeated, stepping closer until her shoes were inches from his face.

“You gave her to them. You gave our seven-year-old girl to the Reyes cartel to pay off your gambling debt.”

“It wasn’t just gambling, Sarah!” he yelled, finally snapping, looking up at her with desperate, bloodshot eyes.

“It was my life! They had a gun to my head! They were going to kill me, and then they were going to come upstairs and kill you both!”

Sarah stared at him, her face completely unreadable.

Slowly, she crouched down until she was eye level with the man she had loved for ten years.

“So you traded her life for yours.”

“No!” he cried, reaching out to touch her arm.

She violently slapped his hand away.

“They don’t want to hurt her, Sarah! Reyes doesn’t have a child. He wanted an heir. She’s in a mansion in Bogota. She has everything…”

Smack.

Sarah’s palm connected with his jaw with sickening force.

His head snapped to the side, blood instantly welling at the corner of his mouth.

“You sold our baby,” she whispered, her eyes wide, tears finally spilling over her lashes, hot and furious.

“You are a monster.”

Suddenly, the lights in the kitchen flickered.

Then, they died completely, plunging the house into suffocating darkness.

Sarah gasped, stumbling backward.

David scrambled to his feet in the dark, his panic shifting from his wife to the absolute silence outside.

“David?” Sarah’s voice wavered, the anger momentarily replaced by instinctual fear.

“Get down,” he hissed, grabbing her shoulder and dragging her behind the heavy oak kitchen island.

“What did you do?” she whimpered, pulling away from his touch, disgusted even in the darkness.

“I missed the final wire transfer,” he whispered rapidly, his eyes scanning the moonlit shadows cast through the kitchen window.

“To pay off the interest. Reyes said if I was late…”

The front door exploded off its hinges.

The sound was like a bomb going off in the small hallway.

Heavy, tactical boots slammed against the hardwood floor. One. Two. Three men.

Red laser sights pierced the darkness, sweeping across the living room walls, creeping closer to the kitchen.

“David,” Sarah breathed, pure terror clutching her throat.

“Listen to me,” he whispered, pressing his forehead against hers in the dark.

“I am a coward. I am a piece of shit. But I will not let them touch you.”

Before she could process his words, David stood up from behind the island.

“Hey!” he screamed into the dark. “Over here!”

Silenced gunshots coughed rapidly—thwip, thwip, thwip.

Sparks flew as bullets shredded the refrigerator, the microwave, the cabinets.

David grunted, a wet, heavy sound, but he didn’t fall.

Instead, he charged the hallway.

Sarah screamed his name, covering her ears as bodies collided in the dark, the sickening sound of flesh and bone crashing into the drywall.

A man cursed in Spanish.

Another gunshot. Much louder this time. A heavy revolver.

Then, silence.

A terrifying, absolute silence.

Sarah curled into a ball behind the island, shaking violently, her hands clamped over her mouth to muffle her own sobs.

Seconds felt like hours.

Footsteps dragged across the floorboards.

Slow. Heavy. Wet.

A hand gripped the edge of the kitchen island.

Sarah grabbed the glass shard from the floor, ready to drive it into the throat of whoever came around the corner.

A bloody face appeared in the moonlight.

It was David.

He collapsed onto the kitchen floor, clutching his stomach. Blood poured through his fingers, dark and thick.

“David!” she cried, dropping the glass and sliding over to him.

She pressed her hands over his, trying to stop the bleeding, her anger forgotten in the sheer trauma of the moment.

“It’s okay… it’s okay, I’ve got you,” she lied, sobbing hysterically.

He coughed, blood splattering against his chin.

He reached into his blood-soaked jacket pocket with a trembling hand.

He pulled out a heavy, black metal key and a burner phone, pressing them into her slick, bloody palms.

“Locker 402… Central Station,” he choked out, his eyes losing focus.

“What? David, stop talking, save your strength.”

“Listen to me, Sarah,” he gasped, his grip suddenly tightening on her wrist with terrifying strength.

“The cartel… Reyes… he didn’t buy Mia.”

Sarah froze, the blood on her hands suddenly feeling like ice.

“What are you talking about?”

“Reyes works for… for the buyer. A middleman.”

David coughed violently, his body seizing.

“Who?” Sarah screamed, shaking him. “Who has my daughter?!”

David’s eyes locked onto hers, filled with a sorrow so deep it tore the breath from her lungs.

“Your father, Sarah.”

The world stopped spinning.

“What?” she whispered, her voice hollow.

“Your father,” David wheezed, tears mixing with the blood on his face. “He never approved of us. He knew about my gambling. He set it up.”

Sarah couldn’t breathe. Her father? The respected judge? The man who had held her while she cried over Mia’s empty bed?

“He paid the cartel to threaten me,” David confessed, his voice growing incredibly faint.

“He forced me to sign over custody to a shell corporation… or he was going to have you killed, Sarah. He wanted Mia. He just didn’t want you.”

“No,” Sarah shook her head violently. “No, you’re lying! You’re lying to save yourself!”

“Look in the locker,” David whispered, his eyes slowly drifting up toward the dark ceiling.

“The files… the transfers… his signature is on all of them.”

He let out a long, rattling breath.

“I’m sorry, Sarah… I loved you… so much.”

His hand went limp.

His eyes fixed on nothing.

David was gone.

Sarah knelt on the cold kitchen floor, surrounded by shattered glass, bullet holes, and the bleeding corpse of her husband.

Her mind fractured, the reality of her entire life shattering into a million sharp, jagged pieces.

Her loving father. Her supportive father. The monster who stole her child and destroyed her husband to do it.

She looked down at her hands, soaked in David’s blood.

She looked at the black key and the burner phone sitting in her palm.

The weeping, terrified housewife died on that kitchen floor alongside her husband.

Slowly, Sarah stood up.

She wiped the blood from her hands onto her jeans, leaving dark, crimson streaks across the denim.

She didn’t look back at David’s body.

She stepped over the shattered plates, over the dead cartel hitman in the hallway, and walked out the front door into the cool night air.

She unlocked her phone, dialed a number she knew by heart, and waited as it rang.

“Hello, pumpkin,” her father’s warm, familiar voice echoed through the speaker. “Is everything alright? It’s late.”

Sarah stared at the moon, her eyes cold, dead, and utterly terrifying.

“Hi, Dad,” she said, her voice smooth and completely devoid of emotion.

“I’m coming over. We need to talk about Mia.”
